- author sandra tsing loh is divorcing and wrote this article about it. interesting article, many truisms (i think, speaking as a never married) but ultimately too bleak.
- city of virginia beach FAIL: i noticed a change at the little park just across the street from where i live. about 2 weeks ago, there was lots of tree cutting and trimming activity. i am one that would normally support fairly vigorous pruning as i walk my dog alot and will have memorized which streets or trails have lots of low hanging tree branches that threaten to gouge out my eyes on my walks with the magpie. however, they did appear to be planning to deforest the landscape, which i had commented to my guy when i noticed it. in any event, sometime last week, i noticed that the benches were different. instead of just a regular, metal bench that was there – and not that old or weathered in appearance – i started noticing benches with a little armrest in the middle. like dividing a bench into two sections of two seats. so how does that relate to the compassion fail? well, those types of benches, specifically recently placed benches, are devised at least in part to render lieing on or sleeping on benches impossible. it harkens back to debates in my hometown (san francisco!!) in the 80’s (maybe they still debate it, despite SF’s reputation as completely socialist). i just saw on this mornings news that a homeless shelter has been built about 2 blocks in the other direction, so i realized there is definitely a connection there. i find it disappointing. i mean, i have noticed a particular kind of asian appearing man on a 10 speed with really old school radio headphones that did seem to be stationed on one of those benches napping alot since i’ve been here, and i have noticed the wafting scent of pot drifting from individuals sitting for a long while in that area… but i also feel for the folks who don’t have a place to go during the day – and may not feel safe at night sleeping in a new and clean shelter with strangers in a room. i’m conflicted. i don’t want to encourage loitering or unsafe areas by any means (the landscaping changes do make for more visible areas which i actually now think is an improvement and make it more likely that i might strol around the block there at dusk), but i also think switching out new and perfectly good benches for most likely lieing down inhibition is kind of paranoid.
- in regards to using FAIL above, slate posted a great article about the epic rise of fail
- i am enjoying twitter so much – i’ve so been on it for a few years - i do approve my “followers”, after the epic fail of having them as a widget on my blog last year and the ensuing nightmare – and i really do keep in touch on a daily basis with quite a few really cool people i know who live far away. wish i could get my brother and grandparents to tweet!
- i <3 my boyfriend! he is completely wonderful and awesome and smart and cute! i aim to get so we are able to spend any and every moment we want together, but for obvious reasons, i can’t really put all of that out there on the blog.

maggie and the thing
I recall hearing this interview on NPR a couple years ago and being charmed by the concept. What started off as a book about people and their treasured but threadbare “dirty wow wow(s)”, has morphed into a newer book about our four legged friends and their beloved pals.
The creators of the popular book DIRTY WOW WOW present this brand new album, featuring beloved family pets and the raggedy objects of their affection. Big dogs, small dogs, mixed breeds, purebreds, puppies, and seniors tug, chase, chew, guard, nuzzle, sleep on, and play with their shredded teddies, blankies, and chewies. Each dog portrayed has formed a bond with a self-selected favorite, and many of them remain loyal to just one toy. Among the toys that have survived the perils of puppyhood, many continue to give comfort and joy to their aging pooches. Every lovingly photographed image of our best friends with their best friends will resonate with dog lovers and the readers who love them.
The pictures and stories are charming. I think I need this book.
dear pal,
i CANNOT wait for your arrival! we are going to totally have the best time! and i promise to NOT say “totally” the entire time you are here!
when you arrive on friday, i will be there to pick you up. you are going to stay in my room, whilst mags and i slumber in the guest suite (aka maggie’ room). that way you can have the whole bath to yourself and privacy as well. now, i did move any kind of TV out of the master in an effort to aid my sleeping abilities. however, worst case scenario, i do have my little 13″ and a cable jack in the room… also, i’ve got product (shampoo/conditioner, lotion, hair gunk – even a potential product trial for L&L wating for you in the halls). pack a toothbrush and some mascara…
saturday, not sure how early you will or will want to wake up! this can be our mellow day, just hang out, want to show you around were i live, take you out to the beach! i think you might enjoy sharing the seafood appetizer from catch 31 (aka “the tower of terror”) that i like to take my favorite peeps to enjoy when they visit!

eli says "two big claws up!"

trace's visit
included on saturday will be, hopefully, nice weather (nights not below 50 and days in the 70’s-80’s?) and a couple of nice walks with the magpie and a trip or two for coffee! let’s play it by ear, i know the time change is a bi-otch..
sunday is the go for broke day! i think i misspoke a bit when i said it was 2 hours to DC. i google mapped it today at work, and that says 3 ish hours. but i know we can make under 3 with timing. it would be best to leave as early as you can stand to (you can snooze in the car!). not sure yet exactly where will be the best place to park, but once in the city, we can walk and/or ride the metro to grab a quick, yummy and healthy lunch at one of the 8, 000,000 cosi’s around the city! the washington mall is cool – all the memorials and museums (we can see julia child’s kitchen!!) and a walk to the white house (maggie wants a picture of bo). still not sure where to find the bobble heads….
i”ll be driving back home (i actually registered the thought “i wonder what side of the road they drive on in canada?” running thru my brain – don’t be afraid!). we shall sleep.
monday we will attend the super neato lecture for which you are flying cross country. in my mind, i will ask the speaker’s “people” for a brief interview – i know my podcast listeners would totally dig it – but that scares the SHIT out of me! instead, i look forward to a great afternoon, hopefully some great weather and time spen with a new/old friend.
tuesday i will take you to the airport, sending you on your safe journey back home… oh, and don’t think you are getting off without an interview for MY podcast, a plea for advice on recording equipment and, by the way, i need to know what size T shirts the whole fam wears… and KA too. oh, and i have wireless but i know realize i don’t know the “password” to my signal that i had the nerd herd set up for me. so just use mine? its not a mac. sorry
xoxoxo,
your pal from the interwebz
*in the millennium, pen pal = internetz
ok. i’m home from work now and am off for the weekend! woot! trying to catch up on all my blog reading and prepare for catching up on blogging of my own…. so here is just a little awesomeness until i decide to sit back in front of the computer again tomorrow:
- thanks to derek, whose wife is coming tovisit virginia next month (wootie woo!), i have now seen this:
- maggie mae is doing ok on her meds. however, she seems to have developed a weird case of kleptomania. she is not a dog who has ever chewed things up or any shenanigans like that – although she will, on rare occasion, steal and eat a chapstick or other such emollient product. in the last 2 weeks or so she has taken to carrying my bedside night time lipglosses about the house (but not eating or chewing them), digging into my purse and plucking out items and carrying them about and, last but not least, grabbing the ENTIRE bottle of my new pain meds and gnawing on the child proof plastic cap 4 feet from my whilst giving me a “you lookin’ at me??!” look out of her wee, beady little eyes
- the peeps abide. witness:
