odds and ends

• thanks to DKM for RT this link to a newsweek article  about Ms. O:    …because the truth is, some of what Oprah promotes isn’t good, and a lot of the advice her guests dispense on the show is just bad. The Suzanne Somers episode wasn’t an oddball occurrence. This kind of thing happens again and again on Oprah. Some of the many experts who cross her stage offer interesting and useful information (props to you, Dr. Oz). Others gush nonsense. Oprah, who holds up her guests as prophets, can’t seem to tell the difference. She has the power to summon the most learned authorities on any subject; who would refuse her? Instead, all too often Oprah winds up putting herself and her trusting audience in the hands of celebrity authors and pop-science artists pitching wonder cures and miracle treatments that are questionable or flat-out wrong, and sometimes dangerous.     
• i really dislike the local weatherman who, sadly, is on the one morning local news channel i can tolerate. why do i hate this person? not because of the typical used car salesman or bad lounge act quality that local newscasts can have, because he certainly does have that, no, this guy has even more annoying qualities. it’s how he starts with the “snow hope index” in like freaking october, complete with a stupid snowman logo. though it can snow here, it is really not worth this mans breath to go on and on and on and on every day for 6 months about how much it MIGHT snow or how it DIDN’T snow yesterday…. he is fond of stupid puzzles and quizzes and spends an inordinate amount of the total morning broadcasts babbling about weatherlike things and systems and i just want to say “MAP! CLOUDS! POINT! TEMPERATURES! RECITE! DONE!”
•   i have two days off in a row and its gorgeous outside!!! so i am OUT!                                                                                                 

today i am worried

i am struggling today for something to post. i have been trying to jot a few things down each night, then double check in the morning right when i wake up and post’em. i worry that if i don’t lay something down first thing, i’ll forget and not post by pure accident!

it’s not that i don’t have any ideas, it’s that right now it is almost 11pm, and i will wake up about 5am to double check this before i do all my morning stuff (ie; lay in bed and check my websites, scowl at the clock, wonder what the temp is outside). so basically, i’m ready for bed and my arms are hurting so i don’t have the time to:

1. comment on the oprah’s favorite things show – didn’t she say she wasn’t doing those anymore? i tried to google last years list and didn’t find one like the previous years, yet i don’t have time to research more. my first thought was she didn’t have one last year and now that she is getting maybe a little bit of bad publicity, it reappears. but i am cynical that way. and could she just apologize to every fat person she self-righteously clucked at over the last year or two. please. and josh groban – don’t get me started.
2. write more about my arms – heinous pain has diminished – wearing braces – got some drugs last night on the way home from work and the vicodin at least took the edge off last night.   appt. with the hand surgeon december 20th.
3. just made a brine for the turkey. made the mousse part of the white chocolate tiramisu trifle i am serving thursday (see cover of bon appetit this month). boiling gibbles for gibble juice (if you read this you know what that is!).
4. my house apartment is a disaster.
5. i want to comment about chubbercheekers great post today.
6. some person on nablopomo wrote that essentially people should comment everytime they view a blog. i think thats dumb.
7. mousefest is like less than 2 weeks away! OMG!!!!
8. i haven’t kissed a boy in 1800 fortnights. i have no idea how long that actually is, but it seems like eternity.
9. i like turtles.
10. my insane, mauling dog, maggie is barking her head off and i would like to put a teeny tiny cork right in her snoot. if it would SHUT HER UP!!!!!!

my arms hurt now. beddy bye time.

watching oprah on the dvr

oprah bugs me. i don’t really spend a lot of time reflecting and ruminating on ms. winfrey, but she just bugs me. she is everywhere after all – and i do subscribe to “o” magazine (even martha stewart STOPPED putting herself on the cover after a couple of years, oprah) -  i  have XM satellite radio in my car and she has the “oprah and friends” channel, but i don’t listen much to it. the magazine is pretty good, so i just skip over whatever egocentric nonsense she has contributed. i tivo her show and usually watch the fluffier pieces and they are entertaining. but nobody ever EVER ever calls her on her condescension. it’s just uncomfortable to watch her do any kind of “serious” interview cause she seems kind of mean. actually, most of the time i watch her on her show i think “i am never watching this woman again!!!!” and yet i do.

for whatever reason – and why do we need to bother women about it anyway, she seems to have regained quite a lot of weight lately. she really hasn’t even acknowledged that – i think she recently had a show (i deleted that one) to talk about her thyroid and how it has wreaked havoc on her weight. fine, whatever, but if she lived her fancy “listen to bob greene and just eat an apple why don’t you stupid people love yourselves enough” advice i do not believe that her thyroid gland alone would cause her to be back in a size… whatever. gain weight yeah, feel blah, yah. but be real, girl, you aren’t doing all that crap you make shows about every so often where you like to tut tut all the folks in the audience. she loses weight, she gains weight. fine. she used to be some kind of every woman and that was wonderful. she is very condescending to many of her guests, she interrupts people she brought on as experts to give HER advice to people as to how they should solve a problem, think about things, be more like her. and so quick to point out how THEY are not heeding the messages from wherever and could we all please be enlightened like her. i don’t know what the deal is about her school or whatever, but bad shit can happen anywhere so unless oprah herself has like 101 orphans in her attic polishing her shoes or something i don’t really care about it all that much in so far as things being a bad reflection on her.
